Mulching is the favor you do for your garden
Those hot dry summers and cold windy winter days are tough on plants, luckily there’s mulch to help them out. It’s a staple of most home landscapes and when applied properly it can make all the difference. Starting with the basics; you’ll want to keep it a few inches off your home’s foundation or other structures like sheds and fences and never let it cover or rest on the plants that its intended to help. Most of the time just one to two inches of depth is enough to hold in moisture and protect your garden from the colder days of winter. If the area is a brand-new bed, a bit more may be needed since it will settle over time. Also, try and pick a mulch that is as natural in color as possible and avoid the bright reds and orange that could seem less natural.
Some of the common mistakes in the process is the mulch is too deep or has been left on the leaves of the plants, or there has been poor clean-up once the job of installing the mulch has been completed. Mulch left on walkways, driveways, lawns or the family patio does not instill a well-defined space or professionalism.
The other mulch issue that is all too common is known as a Mulch Volcano. Mulch volcanoes happen around trees’ trunk, when the mulch is piled far too deep at the root flare of the tree. This can cause the tree to rot slowly over time and fall over without warning or it can be the cause for girdling roots that slowly choke the tree to death.
